Algarve pousadas might just be the region's best-kept secret. A pousada (poo-sar-der) is a state-subsidised hotel, usually in a particularly well-favoured spot. Portugal boasts more than 40, but the Algarve region has only 2, (with a third on the way).
The idea behind the pousadas was to provide an option of luxury and service within a setting that would reflect and celebrate the culture of the region in which each establishment was situated.
Sao Bras
The Pousada do Sao Bras has magnificent views of the surrounding mountainous areas and down to the sea at the south coast. It boasts the distinction of having been the first pousada in Algarve (built in 1942) and the second in the whole of Portugal.
Although it is set in peaceful countryside away from the crowded Algarve resorts, a 30-minute drive brings you to the coast, Faro airport and those fabulous Algarve beaches.
Being located in the centre of the Algarve (which only stretches 90 miles by 30 miles at its absolute extremities) it's not hard to reach many of the region's best attractions from the pousada.
Driving north brings you to the start of the serras, the lush mountain groupings that separate the Algarve from the Alentejo region. The mountain road east brings you soon to Alcoutim and the Guadiana river that forms the border with Spain. The riverside road south is sprinkled with castles and ancient fortifications - a reminder of more dangerous times.
East of Sao Bras, the town of Loule and its popular Saturday market is a must for tourists. Choose from local crafts like pottery, leather and copper goods. And don't forget to inspect the decorated chimneys that give the place its distinctive air.
But what's on offer at Algarve pousadas, you ask? The Pousada Sao Bras has 31 rooms and two suites, all air-conditioned and has been redesigned to make it accessible to disabled visitors. Guests can use the outdoor pool and on-site tennis court, while a peaceful drink on the terrace offers spectacular views down to the sea.
Local activities include golf, water sports, and many beautiful walking routes, while on the coast at Vilamoura, the sophisticated set can enjoy some casino glamour.
Sagres
Down at the south west extremity of the Algarve, once thought by Europeans to be the edge of the world, the Pousada do Infante offers breath-stopping views from its setting atop cliffs overlooking the Atlantic ocean.
This is the area where Prince Henry the Navigator (15th Century) had his School of Navigation. This establishment spawned the mariners who 'discovered' new territories (like Brazil!) in the name of the Portuguese crown.
To the north, there are many choices of scenic, unspoilt Atlantic beaches, which are popular with surfers, since the rollers here are the largest in Algarve.
A few kilometres west from Sagres is the southwestern-most point in Europe, Cabo Sao Vincente. This boasts Prince Henry's school within the Forteleza. It is one of the most popular destinations in Algarve, as even a brief visit will convince you. Whatever else, do not forget your camera!
The luxurious Pousada has built up an excellent reputation for its seafood cuisine using local produce, and dining in its restaurant is an experience not to be missed.
The Pousada do Infante has 38 rooms and one suite - all with air conditioning.
There is a sea water swimming pool and snooker facilities while local venues offer tennis, water sports, hang-gliding and deep sea fishing...
The third Algarve pousada will be at the Estoi palacio, where work is currently underway.
The more adventurous tourist might like to consider a 'pousada tour' where one night is spent in a variety of pousadas throughout Portugal.
